Ewer with a Phoenix Head
8th century
Inspired by shapes of metal vases, this vessel has a spout in the form of a phoenix’s head. This mythical bird was a symbol of good fortune in China. Described in textual ancient sources as having a shimmering plumage, it is evoked here by the “three-colours” glazed decor typical of Tang dynasty potteries.
