Sutra of the Perfection of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Verses

1191

This manuscript, dated to around 1191, is written on long palm leaves gathered in a bundle. Made up of 218 folios with coloured margins decorated with representations of small shrines, it presents a Sanskrit text that is one of the earliest and most important Buddhist sutras. Four series of three original illuminations painted in bright colours show divine beings seated on thrones in graceful poses.
