Portrait of Rao Ratan Singh of Bundi

ca. 1700

The first realistic representations of monarchs appeared during the 17th century in album paintings in both India and Iran, where they enjoyed great success. After more than a century of formalism, the artists developed a stylistic innovation by concentrating almost exclusively on the face in more or less conventional terms.
