“Constellations” – Salem Al Mansoori
Installation from 6–18 November
Free with a museum admission ticket
Since we’ve walked the earth, men and women, young and old, have been inspired – and guided – by the night sky. To make sense and order of these countless stars, humanity developed a system to group and distinguish them into what we now call constellations.
Constellations are simply visual patterns modeled after famous characters from mythology. Aquarius. Cassiopeia. Orion. These figures, known for their epic stories, became recognisable guides for travelers, and their anchored positions in the night sky allowed everyone below to navigate and travel the world.
Now, constellations may no longer be our maps of choice, but to Emirati artist Salem Al Mansoori, they’re still beautiful metaphors of humanity and its civilisations over time. Throughout our launch month, Al Mansoori’s extraordinary installation will use Louvre Abu Dhabi visitor data to create interactive, distinctly shaped constellations. Each “star” will represent one nationality, while the size of each star will reflect the number of visitors from that nationality.
Spoken Art – Pop-up poetry performances
9, 10 November
Free with a museum admission ticket
Poetry in the UAE is as old as the sails of boats found in dhow graveyards today. As one of Arabia’s ancient art forms, Bedouins used the spoken word through recitation and song to pass down stories of love, loss, and triumph. Local legend also reminds us that on months-long voyages, pearl divers believed their poems, when spoken, would be caught in the sails of their dhows and travel back home to their loved ones.
In recent years, the UAE has witnessed the spawning of a thriving, contemporary poetry movement known as Spoken Word which has helped to reignite interest and respect for poetry as fine art. Spoken Word emphasizes the performance of poetry as much as the written word and is full of imagery, energy, rhythm, and storytelling.
During Louvre Abu Dhabi’s first anniversary week, seven UAE-based contemporary poets will perform original work inspired by the museum’s artworks throughout its twelve galleries.
