Pioneering Iraqi artist, Shakir Hassan Al Said, experimented with art as a means for spiritual reflection. By piercing holes, scratching, etching and writing on various solid surfaces, he creates different dimensions for contemplation.

As his artistic expression moved from figurative to abstract, Arabic alphabets appeared in the form known as Hurufiyya.

In this painting, Al Said wrote the word hurrīyah,“freedom” in Arabic, appreciating its abstract form and beauty both visually and spiritually.

Close your eyes, imagine a word that feels beautiful to you.

What is the word that you see and why do you think it came to mind?

How does the word make you feel?
