The subject of this work painted around 1615 by the Flemish artist Jacob Jordaens is an episode from the Bible: the parable of the Good Samaritan. In this story told by Jesus Christ, a Samaritan (the one wearing the turban on the right) stopped on the road to take care of a man who had been wounded by robbers and loaded him onto his own horse. The story was used by Jesus to illustrate one of the fundamental values of Christianity: charity, in other words the importance of treating everyone with compassion, regardless of beliefs or social class.
