Since Antiquity, light has been perceived as a visible manifestation of invisible powers. This metaphysical connection with the divine has inspired works of art with a variety of meanings in the major world religions. In Islam, mosque lamps symbolise light as circular and enveloping. In the Christian world, light is vertical and comes down from heaven to illuminate mankind through the art of stained glass. Finally, in Buddhism, gold is used to illustrate this relationship between the divine and light: the inner light of Buddha who found illumination.
