This double sheet from a cartographic manuscript titled Le Livre des routes et des royaumes (The Book of Roads and Kingdoms) is deeply indebted to the Ptolemaic view of the world as round. The focal point of commercial and cultural exchange, the Gulf occupies the most important place in this highly geometric representation borrowed from the theological symbolism of Arabic mathematics.
