Speaker: Dr Devika Singh, The Courtauld Institute of Art, London
Dr. Devika Singh from The Courtauld Institute of Art will discuss the international connections that have shaped Indian modern and contemporary art, revealing key episodes of intense international engagement from the post-independence period.
17.05.23 | Camera and Time Outside the “West”: Reading the Louvre Abu Dhabi Photographic Collections Against the Grain, 6pm
Speaker: Prof. Daniel Foliard, Professor of Modern History at Université Paris Cité.
Professor Daniel Foliard from Université Paris Cité will examine Louvre Abu Dhabi’s photographic collections, decentering perspectives and questioning Eurocentric narratives that have framed the history of photography. His focus is on the relationship between photography and time, a critical dimension of the medium from its inception.
Biography:
Dr Devika Singh, The Courtauld Institute of Art, London
Dr. Devika Singh is a Senior Lecturer in Curating at the Courtauld Institute of Art. She was previously Curator of international art at Tate Modern. She has curated a number of exhibitions internationally and her writing has been published widely in exhibition catalogues, art magazines, and academic journals. Her upcoming monograph International Departures: Art in India after Independence will come out this Autumn with Reaktion Books.
Prof. Daniel Foliard, Professor of Modern History at Université Paris Cité
Daniel Foliard is a historian whose core interest is on modern European imperialisms and their visual archives. His first book Dislocating the Orient: British Maps and the Making of the Middle East, 1854-1921 was published by the University of Chicago Press. The Violence of Colonial Photography, his second monograph, was published in English by Manchester University Press in 2022. Foliard has developed a robust expertise in the historical exploration of sensitive material documenting colonial and imperial contexts.
