Turban helmet
The silver inscriptions that cover this helmet honour the Khagan (Turkoman emperor) and exhort its wearer to circumspection and introspection. Inspired by turbans worn by dervishes, its form heightens the symbolic power of this protective article.
Helmet in the form of a silk roll
Its furrowed brows and lined forehead give this Japanese military officer’s helmet a threatening appearance. Its height and shape, which replicates a piece of silk rolled up at the sides, distinguished it from those worn by other clan chiefs on the battlefield. This was because rather than being designed to protect its wearer, the helmet had another function: to be visible from a distance so that the soldiers could see at a glance where their officer was.
